The Choreographic Archive of Siobhan Davies Dance

Title: Creative Project

Work: Primary Bank 2007

Summary

Primary Bank is Siobhan Davies Dance's project for local schools, replicating Siobhan Davies Dance's choreographic method, which is driven by a process of intelligent questioning and enquiry. The project launched in September 2007 with pupils from Charlotte Sharman Primary School (the company's neighbour at it's home, Siobhan Davies Studios) following extensive preliminary workshops and Inset with the school.

Analysis

‘I thought choreography was something you had to be taught but perhaps our whole life is choreographed; we respond to the stimulus around us all the time’ (Steve, teacher, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘The most important thing for me is how the project has encouraged you all (the children) to become open minded’ (Steve, teacher, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘The experience has given us lots of ideas and opportunities to develop. We now have an awareness of how dance can enrich the curriculum rather than be delivered in the dry way it currently is within schools’ (Steve, teacher, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘Working with Siobhan Davies Dance has changed me! They taught me how to express myself and get involved more’ (Jessica, pupil, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘The highlight of working with Siobhan Davies Dance is that you get to participate in things you don’t usually do!!!’ (Shanice, pupil, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘Every session is more fun and every week is more challenging. The whole experience has made me more confident in myself’ (Selina, pupil, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘I love working with Siobhan Davies Dance, because you can express yourself, have fun and the adults take in to account what you say and do’ (Georgia, pupil, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘I learnt that dancing isn’t something that pops out of anywhere, it’s a talent that we all have but it’s just hidden inside us’ (Libby, pupil, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).

‘I thought dance was hip hop and disco dancing but it actually turns out to be everyday life movements and it was much more emotional than I expected it to be’ (Leanna, pupil, Charlotte Sharman Primary School).
